Ann Arbor to Dallas Center to Pueblo -- August 2 & 3, 2008

Colorado Springs storm
We made it to Pueblo today, Sunday, leaving Dallas Center around 8 a.m. Central time and arriving in Pueblo around 9 p.m. Mountain time -- about 780 miles. We stopped at Illinois and Iowa rest stops on the way to Dallas Center yesterday, Saturday -- departing Ann Arbor at 7:15 a.m. Eastern Daylight time and arriving in Dallas Center at 4:30 p.m. Central time. Weather has been great; travel has been easy.

Iowa rest stop

Nebraska rest stop

On a hill above a rest-stop on I-80 outside of Omaha, Nebraska, we saw a beautiful building that Alisa later discovered was the Holy Family Shrine. Gorgeous architecture.

Woke this morning at 5:18 a.m. Mountain Time (7:18 a.m. EDST). Stayed at the Wingate by Wyndam in Pueblo, CO last night after traveling from Dallas Center, IA via Route I-80 – a distance of 780 miles. I drove Nebraska and Alisa took over in Colorado. We stopped at PF Changs (good crispy green beans) in a pretend town shopping mall South of Denver off highway robbery. We paid $8.50 in tolls to travel about 30 miles on E470 trying to get to I-25 without into downtown Denver. Alisa says the E is for Excessive.

Yesterday we visited Virginia in Dallas Center. Her daughter Kathleen stopped by with her 4-year-old Cole, whom she affectionately calls Cola, on occasion. Virginia had gone to the farmer’s market and we had melon and corn-on-the-cob and a delicious chicken salad with grapes and wild rice. After dinner we walked to the Korner Kone and had soft-serve ice cream and watched the sun go down.

Left Dallas Center (after inspecting Virginia’s two-year-old grape vines installed by her son-in-law, Chris) at about 8 a.m. and headed for our nemesis, Nebraska. Conquered Nebraska in 9 hours – at which time it was 3 p. Central. Whoo-hoo, we had another six hours of daylight! to master Colorado.

Not much to see driving south into Denver but that changed fast as we headed into the mountains. Ran into a little rain and a beautiful storm in Colorado Springs where we also almost managed to almost miss Pikes Peak – I swear.
